To everyone's surprise, FC Barcelona announced on Monday the extension of Samuel Umtiti's contract until June 2026 … but that should not stop speculation around his departure!

For months the Catalan press has been talking at length about the intention of FC Barcelona to get rid of Samuel Umtiti. The latter can not regain the level he was in 2018, when he won the World Cup with France and his salary weighs heavily on Barcelona accounts. Several leads have been tried, but Umtiti always ended up staying at Barça … and even extended this Monday! On its official website, the Catalan club have indeed announced that the 28-year-old defender has signed a new contract which now runs until 2026, accepting in the process a big pay cut which could finally allow to register Ferran Torres .

Extend Umtiti … to better sell it?

This extension does not seem only to be linked to the new recruit of Xavi, who arrived from Manchester City for nearly 55M €. According to information from Onda Cero, this new contract could allow FC Barcelona to sell Samuel Umtiti. President Joan Laporta seems to believe that the fall in his salary could in effect more easily attract other clubs, which initially seemed to be rightly frightened by the requests of its agents.
