After the first departure of Zinédine Zidane from Real Madrid in 2018, Florentino Pérez had probed Julian Nagelsmann to take place on the Madrid bench. However, the German technician refused the advances of the Merengue. The current Bayern Munich coach has explained his choice.
After a third consecutive Champions League victory in 2018 with Real Madrid, Zinédine Zidane had decided to leave the Merengue at the top. Therefore, Florentino Pérez had to look for a new coach and finally turned to Julen Lopetegui . In an interview for Sport Illustrated, Julian Nagelsmann revealed that he was approached by the Spanish club at the time, while stationed at Hoffenheim .
Nagelsmann explains why he turned down Real Madrid
“There is a big difference… If you take charge of the first team like I did in Hoffenheim, then I was already a junior trainer and knew all the cleaners and gardeners, the adaptation time is extremely short. Because you know exactly who to turn to when you need cones (for training). If you want your vegetable soup in the evening, you go to the cook you already know. When you first have to get to know everyone in a club, that's already another dimension. So yes, it was good that I was looking for a stage higher than Hoffenheim, but not the highest possible ”, confided Julian Nagelsmann .
