Under contract until June 2022, Ronald Koeman is regularly announced on the side of FC Barcelona. This Sunday's Clasico against Real Madrid could once again impact its future …

As soon as Joan Laporta won the election for the presidency of FC Barcelona in last March, the question of the departure of Ronald Koeman arose. Several observers have indeed pointed out that it is not usual for Laporta to work with a trainer that he has not chosen himself, since Koeman arrived on the previous presidency, that of the very controversial Josep Maria Bartomeu. In Catalonia we have also called for the departure of the Dutchman especially to cut definitively with a very complicated period in the history of the club. Koeman is however still well in place and this even if at the beginning of the autumn many predicted a rapid dismissal, with the arrival of a Xavi or of a Andrea Pirlo. On October 2, Laporta finally took a public stand for his coach, explaining in particular that he “deserves a margin of confidence” and therefore calmed down for a while the speculations around a possible departure. But everything could change quickly …

A fatal defeat against Real Madrid?

This Sunday, FC Barcelona faces one of the most important meetings of its season, with the Clasico against Real Madrid . Considered the most publicized derby in the world of football, this match can make and break careers and Ronald Koeman knows a thing or two about it, having played it as a player as well as in as a coach. A defeat could therefore completely revive the debates around the future of Koeman. What could be worse for Barça than being pushed down by his worst enemy, which moreover only a few weeks after the defeat against Atlético de Madrid (2-0) ? Asked about his future at the press conference preceding this Clasico, Koeman seemed confident in any case. “Things are clear” explained the coach of Barça. “I feel supported, but I know that everything depends on the results”.

On the contrary, a victory could revive Koeman!

But what would happen if it didn't? Because Real Madrid is not in the best period of its season either, with in particular a defeat against Espanyol in La Liga (2-1) and a incredible setback against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League (1-2). A victory could therefore completely reverse the trend for Ronald Koeman, who would automatically become the big assassin of Madrid's sworn enemy and would therefore give balm to the hearts of all FC Barcelona . Moreover, while in Catalonia it has been explained several times that a step back would be impossible due in particular to a break with the locker room, Gerard Pique himself spoke on Sunday. “In my 17-year career, I've never been in a locker room that didn't want the coach,” said the Barça defender, in the columns of El Pais.
